The Ziegler legacy

Born in Sultanabad. In the 1880s the Manchester firm Ziegler & Co. opened rug workshops in Sultanabad, Persia, today’s Arak. Working with local weavers, they created large, airy floral designs in soft madder reds and ivory for European homes, and Ziegler rugs became some of the most sought-after of their time.

Revived in Afghanistan. Weavers in Afghanistan brought the style back as Chobi, meaning “woody” in Dari, after its warm, earthy tones. The wool is hand-spun and dyed with plant dyes, and the finished rug is washed and laid in the sun to mellow its colors. Sultani, meaning “royal”, is the name given to the finest of them.

Your rug. This 5x7 Chobi rug was woven by hand, one knot at a time. No other rug in the world is exactly like it.

About this rug, answered

Is this the only one?

Most of our handmade rugs are one of a kind. If the listing says one in stock, this is the only one, and it is on our floor in Chicago or Evanston until it sells.

Can I see it before I buy?

Yes. Visit either showroom, take it home on approval, or ask us for a FaceTime or video walk-around so you see the colors in daylight before we ship.

Is this rug guaranteed authentic?

Yes. Like every handmade rug we sell, it carries a lifetime guarantee of authenticity and quality. It is what this listing says it is: hand-knotted or handwoven, with the origin, age and materials described. If it ever proves otherwise, bring it back for a full refund.

Will it fit my room?

The exact size is listed above. For a living room, leave about 18 inches of floor around the rug and keep the front legs of the sofa on it. Chat or text us your room measurements and we will tell you honestly if it fits.

Does it come with a rug pad?

Every rug page has a box to add a Durahold Plus pad custom cut to the rug, so the two can arrive together. Rugs over $1,000 include that pad free: keep it in your cart and tell us in chat or in the order note, and we take the pad off the total before the order ships.

How does shipping and returning work?

Free insured U.S. shipping on every rug in the continental U.S. Online orders can be returned within 30 days in the condition received; a restocking fee of up to 15% may apply to change-of-mind returns. Pack the rug the way it arrived, in its original packaging or in plastic.

Is the size exact?

It measures 4'11" x 6'9" (150 x 207 cm), not including the fringe. Handmade rugs can vary slightly from end to end.

How do I clean it?

Vacuum without the beater bar and blot spills right away. A hand-knotted rug should always be cleaned professionally, never in the home. Rugistan® hand-washes and repairs rugs at both showrooms.
