Hallway Runner Size Guide: What Size Runner Do I Need?

Measure your hall, subtract a little floor at each end and side, and pick the length below.

Step 1: measure

Measure the hallway from end to end and wall to wall. Note doors that swing over the floor and any vents.

Step 2: length

Leave about 6 to 12 inches of floor at each end. A 8 to 9 foot hall takes a 6 foot runner, a 10 to 11 foot hall an 8 foot runner, a 12 to 13 foot hall a 10 foot runner, a 14 to 15 foot hall a 12 foot runner, a 16 to 17 foot hall a 14 foot runner, an 18 to 19 foot hall a 16 foot runner, and 20 feet or longer an 18 foot runner. For even longer halls, two matching runners with a gap between them look intentional.

Step 3: width

Leave 4 to 6 inches of floor on each side. A 3 foot hall takes a runner about 2 to 2 1/2 feet wide, a 3 1/2 to 4 foot hall about 2 1/2 to 3 feet, and wider halls 3 to 4 feet.

Handmade runners vary

Hand-knotted runners are measured one by one and can differ by a few inches end to end. Every listing shows the exact measured size, so check it against your hall before you buy.

Keep it in place

Use a thin felt and rubber pad cut to size so the runner does not slide or bunch, and so it lies flat under doors.
