Where the design comes from

Mamluk rugs take their name from the Mamluk sultans who ruled Egypt and Syria from the 13th to the early 16th century. Carpets woven in Cairo in that era are famous for one feature: a large central star or octagon surrounded by smaller stars, shields and geometric panels, like a kaleidoscope.

Today Afghan weavers hand-knot the Mamluk design, usually in the Chobi style: hand-spun wool and vegetable dyes in softer, sun-washed colors such as beige, gray, turquoise, rust and blue. The result is a classic pattern that fits a modern room.

How to recognize one

Look for the big central medallion built from octagons and stars, small geometric fillers all around, and a border of repeating panels. There are no flowers or curving vines; everything is straight lines and angles.

How to choose a good one

Check the back for clear, even knots and the front for crisp lines in the geometry. Hand-spun wool shows gentle shifts of color (abrash), which is a good sign. Pick colors from your sofa, walls or curtains.

Sizes and rooms

Mamluk rugs come in 4x6 and 5x8 up to 8x10, 9x12 and larger. The centered medallion suits a living room seating area or a dining table, where the design sits in the middle of the room.
