Afghan Kazak rugs carry the bold designs of 19th-century Caucasian Kazaks: big medallions, stepped borders and tribal motifs in red, ivory, blue and green. Ours are hand-knotted in Afghanistan from hand-spun wool, with a thick pile and the slightly irregular, hand-drawn look that machine-made copies never get. Shams buys them himself in Afghanistan and imports them direct, so every one is one of a kind and priced without a middleman.

What is an Afghan Kazak rug?
A rug hand-knotted in Afghanistan in the bold style of the old Caucasian Kazaks: large geometric medallions, stepped borders and tribal motifs, usually in red, ivory, blue and green. Ours are woven from hand-spun wool with a thick pile.
How is an Afghan Kazak different from an Indo-Kazak?
Kazak designs are also woven in India and Pakistan. Afghan Kazaks are known for hand-spun wool and a looser, hand-drawn look. The few Indian Kazaks we carry are labeled Indo-Kazak and are not in this collection.
Are Kazak rugs good for high-traffic rooms?
Yes. The dense wool pile and busy geometric pattern hide wear and everyday dirt, which is why Kazaks work well in living rooms, entries and hallways. Use a rug pad and vacuum without the beater bar.
Can I see Afghan Kazak rugs in person?
Yes. Both Rugistan® showrooms, in Chicago and Evanston, carry Kazak rugs and runners among more than 3,000 handmade rugs, and you can take one home on approval to try it in your room.
Can I see this rug before I buy it?
Yes. Rugs marked in stock are on the floor in our Chicago rug store or Evanston rug store. Take one home on approval, or ask us for a FaceTime walk-around so you see the colors in daylight before we ship.
How do I know the size will fit?
Every listing shows the exact measured size in feet and inches and in centimeters. Handmade rugs vary slightly in width along their length. Use the size finder on the home page or chat or text us your room measurements.
What does shipping cost?
Nothing in the contiguous United States: rugs ship free, carefully packed, and go out the same or next business day with tracking by email. Alaska, Hawaii and Canada rates show at checkout; for other countries, contact us for a quote.
Can I return a rug?
Yes: rugs ordered online within 30 days of delivery, in the condition they arrived; rugs bought in our showrooms, within 7 days. Request the return first and we send instructions; local customers can bring it to either showroom. The return policy has the details, including return shipping.
